Why Septic Wellness Checks Matter

Routine septic system wellness checks aren’t just for peace of mind, they can uncover hidden problems before they turn into costly repairs. Recently, we were called to a home after the owners noticed a septic odor near their pool during the wet season.

When we arrived, our first step was to thoroughly assess the system and surrounding property. We quickly discovered that the pool had been installed too close to the lateral lines. During very wet conditions, this allowed septic water to enter the pool’s drainage system, a situation no homeowner wants to deal with. While the client decided not to address the pool placement at that time, our inspection revealed several other concerns that needed immediate attention.

Inside the septic tank, we found a large amount of women’s hygiene products. These products do not break down in a septic system and can lead to blockages, backups, and long-term damage to the drain field. To prevent further harm, we recommended installing a proper septic filter. A filter helps keep solids and non-biodegradable items from leaving the tank and entering the lateral lines, where they can cause expensive failures.

Another challenge was that the septic tank was not easily accessible without digging. This makes future inspections, maintenance, and pump-outs more time-consuming and costly. We recommended installing a secure access lid, making it possible to service the system quickly and without unnecessary excavation.

Once the upgrades were complete, we performed a full septic tank pumping to remove accumulated solids and give the system a fresh start. With the filter and access lid in place, the homeowner is now set up for easier, more effective maintenance in the future.
